Bamboo vs recycled vs Andrex & Cushelle: which is cheaper?
The common assumption is that eco loo roll costs more. Per roll, it often does. Per sheet, bought in a big box, it usually doesn't – at least compared with the big brands.

What the numbers say
Recycled is the cheapest eco option. Who Gives A Crap 100% Recycled Toilet Paper (opens in new tab) in the 48 double-length rolls works out at 22.9p per 100 sheets with free delivery. Each roll has 400 sheets, so one roll does the job of roughly two standard 190-sheet rolls.
Bamboo costs a little more. The cheapest bamboo we found was Who Gives A Crap 100% Bamboo Toilet Paper (opens in new tab) (48 double-length rolls) at 27.0p per 100 sheets. The three big bamboo brands' largest boxes sit within about 2p of each other per 100 sheets.
Andrex and Cushelle are dearer per sheet than the big eco boxes. The cheapest Andrex we found at Tesco was Andrex Family Soft (opens in new tab) at 28.5p, and it's 2-ply. The 3-ply Andrex Ultimate Quilts costs 37.6p per 100 sheets, against 27.0p for Who Gives A Crap's 3-ply bamboo 48-box.
But small eco orders lose. A 12-roll Cheeky Panda Double-Length box costs 52.5p per 100 sheets once £3.95 delivery is added – more than most supermarket options.

How we calculate: (pack price + standard delivery for that pack on its own) ÷ total sheets × 100. Sheets are rolls × sheets per roll as stated by the retailer. "2-ply equiv." divides by ply and multiplies by 2 – a rough way to compare a thick 3-ply sheet with a thinner 2-ply one. Supermarket rows assume you buy in store or with your normal shop, so no extra delivery is added.
Bamboo or recycled – which should you pick?
On price, recycled wins narrowly. Beyond price it's a judgement call, and we'd rather you decide than us:
- Recycled reuses existing paper. Who Gives A Crap's recycled rolls have more sheets per roll (400) than its bamboo ones (370).
- Bamboo is a fast-growing grass. Brands say it's softer; reviews broadly agree, but softness is personal.
